How Islam Arrived in Morocco

Published May 2nd 2026

Islam's journey to Morocco began in the 7th century, marking a transformative era for the Maghreb region. The arrival was not a single event but a gradual process of cultural and spiritual integration.

The Early Expeditions

Around the 7th century, the Umayyad Caliphate expanded into North Africa as far as Andalusia. Uqba ibn Nafi, an Umayyad general, and his army conquered the Maghreb. He was known to have rode his horse into the Atlantic Ocean, declaring that only the sea prevented him from carrying the message of Islam further west. Jewish and Berber populations attempted to resist, but conversions became widespread over time.

The Idrisid Dynasty

A pivotal moment occurred with the arrival of Idris I, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), who was welcomed by the Berber tribes. In 788, Idris I established the first dynasty, the Idrisid dynasty, and founded the city of Fez. Idris II continued the Islamization of the country and encouraged the development of religious institutions in Fez.

Almoravid Dynasty

In the 11th century, the Almoravids, a dynasty of Berber origin, united Morocco and Andalusia under a single Muslim authority. This dynasty was also a military and highly religious movement.

Almohad Dynasty

Around the 12th century, the Almohad dynasty continued the spread of Islam. Furthermore, they began the construction of religious sites such as the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech.

Conclusion

The beauty of Islam in Morocco lies in the harmonious blend of Arab and Berber (Amazigh) cultures. Furthermore, it left a religious legacy in architectural terms, such as the medinas of Fez and its old mosques. Over centuries, Morocco became a gateway for Islam into Al-Andalus (Spain) and Sub-Saharan Africa, preserving a rich scholarly tradition that continues to this day.
